On Tuesday, Theresa Erickson (pictured above), a well-known surrogacy lawyer in California, pleaded guilty to running an illegal baby-selling ring.
Erickson was a trusted and respected member of the infertility community, and these charges have greatly impacted her fans and supporters.
She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for transmitting fake documents to the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego and also falsifying information to the couples whose babies were born through surrogates she recruited.
The shocking scheme was based in San Diego, where Erickson would hire surrogate mothers to travel to infertility clinics in Ukraine to be implanted with embryos created with anonymous donor eggs and sperm.
Then she shopped the unborn babies around to hopeful couples looking to adopt...little did they know, they were involved in illegally "purchasing" their children.
