Surrogacy in India: Benefits for Doctors, Parents and Surrogate Mothers

Surrogacy in India is a very lucrative business for doctors. This booming industry has been experiencing rapid growth in the past few years, and for good reason.

While surrogacy is still a controversial infertility treatment (and illegal in some countries), many couples find great benefits from traveling to India for the process.

Here, surrogacy is strictly business, and although this may seem cold and inhumane, it's actually quite the opposite.

American mother Kirshner Ross-Vaden, told PBS about her experience with surrogacy in India. She compared the difference between her home country, the United States: “You can sign a hundred documents. It doesn’t matter. If that surrogate changes her mind she can sue you for that child, and oftentimes she will win, and coming here to India, these women, they don’t want my child. It’s very cut and dry. They do not want my child. They want my money, and that is just fine with me.”

Surrogacy centers all over India use the latest infertility technology, and combine it with a high level of care for surrogate mothers, all to ensure a successful pregnancy, and healthy, happy babies.

Many clinics require lengthy physical and psychological testing for potential surrogate mothers, and once pregnancy is confirmed, they are well taken care of. Surrogate mothers in India are provided with housing, comprehensive medical care, and of course, a paycheck.

Surrogate mothers get paid about $7,000 per pregnancy, and while this doesn't seem like much, this money allows women to afford new houses and education for their own children, and it is a salary that would otherwise take them many years to earn.

Parents-to-be also benefit from surrogacy in India, not only with a new baby, but also financially. While surrogacy costs about $70,000 in the US, it costs only $14,000 in India, which is a major attraction point for many couples.
